How should I clean the pacifier and how often?
How should I clean the pacifier and how often?
You can find answers regarding how and how often you should clean the pacifiers in our Cleaning Guide >>
Can I put my pacifiers in the dishwasher?
Can I put my pacifiers in the dishwasher?
The pacifiers should not be cleaned in the dishwasher as this may damage the material. Furthermore, most dishwashers do not reach temperatures high enough to sufficiently sterilize the pacifiers.
Why does the pacifier make a sound when in use?
Why does the pacifier make a sound when in use?
Sometimes, when water remains in the nipple after sterilization it can cause a sound when the pacifier is used by your baby. There is no harm in a little water inside the nipple.
When should you replace your pacifier?
When should you replace your pacifier?
We recommend a replacement every 4-6 weeks for both safety and hygienic reasons. But always carefully inspect the pacifier before each use. Pull the nipple in all directions. Throw away at the first signs of damage or weakness. Read more about when and why you should replace the pacifier >>
How long can I use a pacifier?
How long can I use a pacifier?
It depends on how often the pacifier is used, but we generally recommend replacing it every 4–6 weeks. Keep an eye out for any changes in the surface, size, or shape, as well as any ruptures or weaknesses in the material, and replace the pacifier immediately if you notice anything unusual. Once your baby has teeth, always pull the nipple in all directions before use to check for signs of damage. Do not use a pacifier that shows discoloration or other irregularities. Because it is made of natural rubber latex, the nipple may expand over time. Read more about why and how often you should replace pacifiers .
A common mistake many parents make is letting their baby use the same pacifier for too long. Ideally, your baby should have a new pacifier every 4–6 weeks, and pacifiers should also be replaced as your child grows. A pacifier designed for a newborn will not provide the right fit or support for a 3- or 6-month-old. That is why pacifiers come in different sizes adapted to different developmental stages, such as:
- Size 1 (0–6 months): Explore Size 1 pacifiers
- Size 2 (6–18 months): Explore Size 2 pacifiers
- Size 3 (18+ months): Explore Size 3 pacifiers
Choosing the correct size helps ensure both safety and comfort, supporting your baby’s natural oral development at every stage.
Which type of pacifier should I choose?
Which type of pacifier should I choose?
Choosing the right nipple shape can be challenging, as each shape supports different sucking techniques and preferences. Round nipples are often recommended for breastfed babies, as they allow the child to use the same sucking method as at the breast. Anatomical nipples mirror the natural shape of the mouth and help distribute pressure more evenly. Symmetrical nipples offer an easy “always‐correct” orientation, which some babies prefer. Because every child is different, it may take some trial and error to find the perfect fit.
Round nipples
Round nipples are completely round at the bottom and top. With this shape, the baby uses the tongue to cup around the nipple to hold it in place, similar to the technique used while breastfeeding. They are ideal if you want to support a breast-like sucking pattern. Explore all round pacifiers here: BIBS Round Pacifiers.
Anatomical nipples
Anatomical nipples are shaped to match the curve of the baby’s mouth, with a flatter top and a more rounded bottom. This design helps reduce pressure on the palate and gums and supports natural tongue placement. Browse anatomical pacifiers here: BIBS Anatomical Pacifiers.
Symmetrical nipples
Symmetrical nipples are flat and rounded at both the top and bottom, creating a shape that works no matter how the pacifier is positioned. Many babies find this intuitive and comfortable. View symmetrical pacifiers here: BIBS Symmetrical Pacifiers.
Natural rubber pacifiers
Natural rubber (latex) pacifiers are soft, elastic, and more breast-like in feel compared to silicone. They are free from unnecessary dyes and harmful chemicals. They should be cleaned by placing them in boiled (not boiling) water and replaced every 6–8 weeks or when discolored. Explore latex pacifiers here: BIBS Latex Pacifiers.
Silicone pacifiers
Silicone pacifiers are durable, easy to clean, and maintain their shape over time. They are a great choice if you prefer a hygienic and long-lasting material. See all silicone pacifiers here: BIBS Silicone Pacifiers.
Which nipple type is best for the teeth?
Children who continue using a pacifier or thumb-sucking habit after the age of three may develop changes in their bite, such as overbite or crossbite (sometimes called “pacifier bite”). This can affect chewing and biting ability. However, if the child stops using a pacifier before turning three, the baby teeth typically realign on their own, and the permanent teeth are usually not affected.
It's very important to choose a pacifier and nipple that fits your child perfectly. Find our advice and knowledge regarding your choice in our Nipple guide >>
